UFOK IBAAN
This is the story of the Aba women’s riots. A lot of
people do not know that the Aba women’s riots
actually was triggered by events that
happened much earlier in Ikot abasi in Akwa Ibom
The woman activist who now happened to be
the great grandmother of Senator Udo Udoma
in a fit of anger had worked up to the colonial
officer and seized his gun and broke it on her
knee. She had led a group of women to protest
the herculean taxes that was being levied on
market women. For her efforts’, she was shot
point blank and her followers were also killed
with some jumping into the River Imo to escape
the hail of bullets but ending up drowning.
The news of the massacre angered women
everywhere and this is what led to the Aba
women riots which attracted the late Funmilayo
Ransome Kuti and Margaret Ekpo.
