Emotan plays very critically at the leadership ethos as
instilled in the minds of Bini children who were dropped
in the care of Emotan while their mothers went to the
market. Emotan was known as the Lazy one, she was
extremely beautiful but didn’t like to work. She however
had a huge love for children hence the need to drop
the children with her while their mothers went to the
market. She sang with them, taught them things and
told them stories.
She was the last wife of a very powerful man who
however found herself enmeshed in the power struggle
between the legitimate Oba and the usurper who had
taken over the throne.
The battle was fought in Emotans house and she stood
very firmly with the legitimate Oba and ended up losing
her Servant Edo. After the victory, the Oba now
renamed the Kingdom, Edo after the servant and this is
how we all came about the name Edo people today.
